“There’s no place like this place, anywhere near this place, so this must be the place.” reads the sign on the porch at Texas Hatters. Just one of the many Manny Gammage-isms you can find all around our little shop.
Texas Hatters is one of only a handful of true custom hat makers in the United States. We started over 80 years ago under our founder’s name, Marvin “Pappy” Gammage, and the hat making tradition remains in the family into the third and fourth generation. Officially named after the second generation in 1996, after his passing, Manny Gammage’s Texas Hatters, Inc. was continued by his widow, Norma Gammage and their daughter, Joella Gammage Torres, her husband, David A. Torres along with Joella’s son, Joel Aaron Gammage. Since Norma’s passing in July of 2016, some changes have occurred. Manny’s and Norma’s son, Joella’s brother, M. G. Tex Gammage, has inherited the mantle of “silent partner” from their mother. He will be continuing in his career, and as he always has, sending customers to us and helping to continue the Gammage legacy, from wherever he goes, along with his wife, Mary. Joel and his wife, Catrin, have moved to the Pacific Northwest, but he will continue to maintain all of our social media, as well as work on other projects for the family business, like our upcoming 90th Year of Topping the Best in October. He and Catrin are also great models of our hats, living in the colder climate, so the promoting of our hat shop continues in the PNW.
We don’t just make hats that fit your head, better than store-bought; we fit them to your face, your style and even your personality. Or, for you re-enactors and single action shooters; we can help create your character. See, Dr. Marion R. Zetzman, become, Billy Bob Oafly, on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qh3EMNjjzGU
Using our unique talents for hat making, watchful eyes for picking complimenting colors and styles for each customer, and listening ears for hearing what the customers want and need from their hats; we can “top” almost any choosy customer.
We really are, “As modern as yesterday, with tomorrow’s ideas”, as Manny once said. Filling orders on-line with the help of our measuring instructions and pictures from you of your face and top of our head, but still using the hat making methods passed down from the first generation.
Let us “top” you and you’ll know why we say, “We Top The Best”!
